UPDATE: May 9, 2013
WE REGRET THAT SERVICE ON THE
BUS-UP 90 SHUTTLE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY!
For several seasons Bus-Up 90 has operated weekend hike and bike shuttle service between Cedar Falls and Hyak on the John Wayne Pioneer Train in the Iron Horse State Park, as a service to trail users who wanted to enjoy Cascade Mountain greenery and the longest hike and bike tunnel in North America.
We regret that apparently this service has now come to an end.
The Washington State Parks Commission has established new policies and proceedures which require us to pay a hefty "filing fee" to provide this service to parks users in 2013. This year's filing fee requests as much as a month's worth of Bus-Up 90 GROSS income based on last year's figures. If we ran everyday, all year, it would be one thing, but since we only operated on weekends for 4 months last year, we feel a full 25% of the revenue we took in is just too much price to pay in advance when we also have to pay spiraling fuel, insurance and labor costs.
We've been told the up-front fee has been established by the State Parks Commission. and that in payment of that, they are unwavering. We know that State Parks are hurting for money, and we offered to share a portion of shuttle revenue with them on a monthly basis to help out. But that's not enough. They feel they need their money up front, PLUS revenue sharing.
We still believe the shuttle was a benefit and convenience to park visitors, citizens and outdoor enthusiasts. But the Parks Commission apparently only sees it as another way to generate revenue for them, regardless of whether the concessionaire makes a profit not. We cannot afford to operate this service for parks users at a loss. So we regret that as of this time, we will not be operating it at all, ...unless the commission changes their policy.
We thank you for your ridership, kind words, and past support.
